Simulation of a Nuclear detonation on an Earth bound Asteroid

Could this do the trick?  Or turn one lump of rock into multiple missiles? Most likely executed further away from the Earth using an sacrificial robot, rather than a sacrificial human ala Hollywood blockbusters.
