Balenciaga. Spring/Summer 2027 - Milan Fashion Week
In less than 1 year and 3 months, and only 6 shows under his belt, Pierpaolo Piccioli is leaving Balenciaga, another example of conglomerate shuffling within the fashion industry, to which fashion designers are treated like chess pieces, particularly when stock and sales are down, and if you don't cut the mustard within that two year 'probation' period, you are gone. And since 2023, the tenure of fashion designers, with major billion dollar holding companies, is becoming shorter, possibly due to a growing trend going into this so called artificial intelligence, data centres everywhere, in our current Techno, yes you guessed it, Fascistic world. Reducing the need for human creativity?
But, with excuses aside, maybe Piccioli just couldn't deliver after Demna Gsvalia stella 10 year run with Balenciaga, before his, Demna's, current ninety degree turn, towards rigid, realism based aesthetics with his current Gucci ensembles, seemingly wiping his postmodern, raver, East European backlash into oblivion. And yet, one does associate that antithesis, or his once 'mocking' tone of Demna's accentuated extremes during his tenure for Balenciaga, with the Balenciaga template. Which may take a very unique take on the remodelling of Balenciaga into its unique style. Piccioli was just too slick, with his refined "Resort" sportwear orientated looks for it to work.
And for Piccioli's 6th and final show, and one of the shortest tenues in recent years, he called this his most "personal" collection, as the leak that Kering (the Balenciaga holding company), via one of the richest mortals in the world, Kering CEO Bernard Arnault, where going to boot Piccioli off Balenciaga after his 6th show on the 1st October, occurred on the 22nd September 2026, to which Piccioli would have been aware, and kept the news personal.
