Excerpt from "Machines of the Occultus" off the novel THE GRAFT OF SHADOWS (Adrian Glass 2019)



"...Crossing Lexington Drive, nearing the building, Shannah's thoughts are of being grateful to be able to have gained an apartment in such financially difficult times. But, as she looks at the structure, in its linear design, with either side of the building encased in a vertical concrete sheet, with the levels of apartment compressed between the two windowless brutalist slabs. She senses something else from her own intuition, as a fleeting moment. A thought, in a passing instinct of wonder, which she is unable to comprehend. Walking slowly towards the Tower, fascinated by its shape she stares up at the looming apartment block. In a visually transfixed way, The Goranz Tower seemingly stands alone between the other structures which are mostly made up of steel and glass within the Manhattan array of construction, reflecting a radiance of prosperity and dominance, that despite its facade – holds more of an illusion of wealth. Shannah taps her security card onto the reader, as the two glass doors open, she moves into the foyer of the Tower. There is a smell of freshly painted ornaments and displayed upholstery, as she passes by, on her way to the elevators, a couch and two chairs. The area, sparse, minimalistic and devoid of other tenants, as it enveloped by thick set concrete walls, polished and set against a cold backdrop. The aesthetics of the foyer is something Shannah has not viewed with any importance, however this time, as she has only being living in the Tower for three days, there is an appeal in its tomb like coldness..."
