"The Asynchronous Complex: Graft of Shadows."  Excerpt. THE GRAFT OF SHADOWS (Adrian Glass 2019)




The man with his left hand takes out the folded cash, counting it. 
 “Right on, one ninety...Good guess...” He then hands Damyn the keys, places the cash into his wallet. “...Thought you weren't a gambler.” 
 “I'm not...A wise man once said to me, it's always one for two.”  Damyn replies holding up his right hand, showing two fingers. Known that the storage company legitimately could have auctioned the contents of the two containers for double the price paid. But now, with the recession taking hold across the city. Employees, who may not have secure job prospects, will make deals outside from the usual avenues .”
 “Alright, take it easy Ronan.  You got twenty four hours to empty them. Once done, hand the keys to the front desk.” 
“Will do”
 The assistant manager works off.  As Damyn holds up the two keys, looking over the handles which are both coated with a red plastic grip. He then walks toward the two storage containers, both sitting next to each other. “Always graft in close proximity.”  He says to himself as he leans down and inserts the key into the lock, turning it, Damyn hears the storage door unlock. Lifting up the metal shutter, it opens, revealing the contents inside. Peering into the darkened space, he sees a single chair and a suitcase. Chucking to himself, he enters its narrow dimensions. Looking around, he notices a light switch, flicking it on, the area illuminates as he studies, what appears, an antique cane lounge chair. Seeing that the wood is rotten, the chair is worthless...
