"Daceion Ionadi" cocktail (A.Glass 2023)
For the spice mix:
- Pinch of ground Allspice
- 1 Cinnamon stick
- Two drops of Vanilla Essence
- Quarter teaspoon of fresh Ginger
- sweetener (two squirts)
- 1 ounce of water.
- 1 ounce of Pineapple juice
- 1 ounce of sweetened Coconut milk (100%)
- 1/2 ounce of Orange juice
- 1 dash of Orange bitters
Alcohol base:
- 2 Ounces of quality mid tier Dark Rum
Garnish:
- Grated Nutmeg
Preparation:
Fill a shaker with ice, add the 2 ounces of Dark Rum, 1 ounce of Pineapple juice, followed by 1/2 ounce of Orange Juice, then 1 ounce of 100% pure coconut milk, to sweeten, prepare with either sugar syrup (1/8 of a teaspoon) or sweetener (one squirt). A splash of the spice mix (filtered with a muslin cloth) and a dash of orange bitters. Shake well, strain into a chilled Martini glass, garnish with grated nutmeg.
Background:
The Daceion Ionardi cocktail is based off a character that I created, for my 2022 story of the same name from the novel 'Evenfall of the Helical'. There is a sequence in the story, where he interacts, as a young boy, with a Haitian Vodou priest, who was his teacher and mentor. I wanted to show a respectful take on the history of Haitian Vodou, and that it has been a principle guide to Haitian religious beliefs for over Four Hundred years. So, Allspice, Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Vanilla Essence as core spices to Haitian culinary, which has to be applied to this cocktail sparingly, so only a 'splash' (1/2 teaspoon) of the spice mix is needed. The Pineapple and Orange juice, give the cocktail a base sweetness, Orange Bitters and ginger add to its complexity, with the sweetened coconut milk rounding off the Rum taste. The Daceion Ionardi should complement the sweet, with the spice, bitter and freshness of ginger, while the Rum is the drink's main flavour.
A sophisticated and uplifting evening cocktail.
