"I'm less anxious."
"That's an improvement from the last time we spoke."
Dupon looks away briefly, staring ahead at a framed certificate on the adjacent wall. A signed document which displays Caitlin Feldstein's qualifications as a clinical psychologist.
"I guess..." She looks back up at Feldstein. "...Thanks to you."
"It's a two way process. You, Catherine, are doing the heavy lifting. But the process will take time."
Dupon with her right index finger places it on her temple. "Definitely feels like it..."
Feldstein looks at her patient in a caring manner.
"...Trying to avoid the sleeping tablets," Dupon says, her tone and expression, although subtle, holds a valorous manner.
"They are helpful, but in the long run as a way of abating anxiety. Taking sedatives can become more of a hindrance than supportive."
"I understand, that's why I try and avoid, if I feel very restless, anxious, sure, I'll take one. Mostly trying to get through all of this without the need for a sedative."
"Do you still see the flashes of light?" Feldstein asks, as she, in a tactful way, glances at her wrist watch.
"Sometimes, in my dreams. The bright flash and then nothing. It is frightening."
"Have you had any of these experiences lately?"
"Not for awhile, I think, like you've said, they maybe brought on by stress."
"Possibly, but if these visions return, I will refer you to a neurologist."
"Ok," Dupon nods, although reluctant to see a medical specialist if the visions return.
Feldstein stands, as does Dupon.
"We'll talk about this next time. Please, if you have any continued visual or mental images that do not seem normal. You must tell me."
"Yes, If I have anymore of these visions...I will let you know. Should I book for the next session?" Dupon asks, as she follows Feldstein to the closed door of her office.
"It's up to you Catherine. You must look after yourself. That's what's important," Feldstein replies, in a conciliatory manner.
"I know, you've helped so much." Dupon smiles, closing her eyes while feeling a tinge of sadness. Thoughts of past pain, anxiety still linger. While at the same time these prior recollections, that is her suffering, seem unclear. It is as though they are shrouded in darkness. As she is unable to fully understand why she feels this way. Regardless of the lack of clarity, the young woman knows that these sessions have been invaluable. The advice, care and sincerity of her therapist has not been taken for granted.
Dupon leaves Feldstein's office, which is part of an older style building located in a the central business district of her city. Walking to the foyer from Feldstein's psychologist office, she looks up out at the overcast sky from the hallway building window. She lifts her phone from her shoulder bag checking for missed calls. There are none. Her two close friends will be coming around to her place for drinks tonight. Hoping that they will still attend. She then looks ahead as the lift doors open, walking into the small elevator space, as the doors close behind her. Despite the session with Feldstein, Dupon feels deep down that something is not right.
