"Queen of Disks" Thoth Tarot card: analysis and reading.
One of Aleister Crowley's (d1947) more meditative and enigma based Thoth Tarot cards, the "Queen of Disks". Representing feminine fertility, growth and paradoxically the Left Hand Path. Although not disclosed in "The Book of Thoth", the Queen of Disks appears to reflect a higher order of the Conjurer, be it a 'Queen' Witch or Necromancer. To which Crowley did not ever show interest in the darker esoterical elements of occultism, but was mostly steered towards the gnostic Christian/Templer, proto-Fascist mythos which spawned a plethora of 1800s occult societies throughout Europe and the U.K. Yet, Crowley offers some clues to the card's meaning which has a dark and light overture, with it ruled by Sagittarius and Capricorn, and the Queen is seated high above, facing right and looking down onto a fertile desert, while adorning from her helmet large spiral horns of the Markhor. In her right hand, holding a staff with a hexagram cube, and in Indian tantric mythology represents male and female union. Crowley also describes that her intellect is not one of her finer qualities, but rather intuition and instincts are her powers. Which further aligns with the conjurer or oracle prowess, that is very much of the feminine. Also, as noted is a Left Hand Path element, or more so a dichotomy, which could be representing a reckless femme fatale/psychopathy 'quality', from The Book of Thoth, "...They possess immense funds of affection, kindness, and greatness of heart..." and then "...These people are quiet, hard-working, practical, sensible, domesticated, often (in a reticent and unassuming fashion) lustful and even debauched. They are inclined to the abuse of alcohol and of drugs. It is as if they could only realize their essential happiness by getting outside themselves. Also note there is a 'devilish' goat, standing confidently above a sphere in the lower left hand side, and the Queen holding a disk with interwoven circular shapes, both indicating a desire for influence and control, possible through black magic or sexual alchemy practices. As Crowley also claims the card is of the Watery realm. The Queen of Disks is very much a contractionary card, thus an interesting one. With this quote from The Book of Thoth as the final part of the card's 'meaning': "The general advice is to go forward quietly without overt attack upon existing situations."
Reading:
Meditate of fertility, renewed growth from nothing. Released through the self, sit perched above, looking down at creation. Mortals also can create, and the feminine intuition is pure, as is its instincts, aligned within the masculine. You maybe able to see with the Third Eye, yet find balance as the contradictions of the self are abound, open heart, yet cold resolve. Empathy, maybe confused with conjuring. The circle, is not completeness, but control. The hexagram above the staff, of the Left Hand Path, shows the union between male and female. The sexual alchemy, the lust and debauchery must be balanced, or you'll lose control of desire. And be chained to its cycle. Resentful, you may lose the control you so much want to master. Yet, the devilish mountain goat, offers you that balance, detached from worldly desires, it stands above the Earthly realm, to control lust, desire and its sexually folly. The ones that are never satisfied, addicted to the cycle of pleasures. Externally drawn into self destruction. When destruction will come naturally. Then why be attached to the weakness? Rather, view it all with a detached superiority, even if you dance on that edge. You will not succumb. You will therefore learn the quietness, the hidden, the aleph, and be that discerner of fate. As you may attain what you view from afar or it may come to you.
