Chiasmus cult cinema trailers - "Bourne Ultimatum" (2007). *These will be ongoing posts, courtesy of the A.Glass DVD collection. As I offer via Chiasmus Cult trailers, my summarized overviews*
"The Bourne Ultimatum" (2007) would be considered the 3rd on the Jason Bourne series, based loosely off the novel by the American author, the late Robert Ludlum, and very loosely based on author, screenwriter Tony Gilroy's original story, it is very much a standalone movie. And the highest grossing film in the series, earning over $400 million worldwide, on a budget of $110 million. Directed by English director Paul Greengrass, with his shaky 'spy' cam, quick edit style, which gives the audience an immersive third party perspective in both the action sequences and dialogue, as the unwillingly, yet voyeuristic spectator going along for the ride. And essentially the Bourne series is a ramped up spy thriller, aligned with everyone's favourite government mythos, of brainwashed trained killers, secretly trained through clandestine CIA programs, working for the government to do their dirty work.
So, the overall premise for the Bourne series is not a new one, yet what makes The Bourne Ultimatum unique, is the redemption of the character, "Jason Bourne" played with a determined fury by Matt Damon (with some of the best hand-to-hand combat scenes filmed), to try and find out what happened to him, and expose the truth about a rogue CIA program, which is now starting to target anyone that it deems a threat to National Security, including its own operatives. Fiction meets reality? Or a prophetic warning through a Hollywood production. It would not be the first.
And for One Hour and Fifty Five minutes, The Bourne Ultimatum keeps to its pace and action, which is constant up until the ending, with a manic car chase through the streets of lower Manhattan, as Bourne in "Terminator" esque manner, makes it to the building where he was turned into the ultimate hitman, while handing over the damning files of the secret assassin program to Pam Landy (played by Joan Allen), the CIA Deputy Director. With a shootout at the end, via a busted up government hitman on his tail, from the manic car chase earlier, as Bourne limps his way to where it all started, to end it, i.e., kill the ones responsible for his brainwashing and be turned into a killer, the busted up hitman, allows Bourne to live, to which Bourne dives off the building into East River. The twist? Before diving off the building, he, Bourne allowed the one that turned him into "Jason Bourne" to live, so that they can be trialed and exposed as the ambitiously devious autocratics to the U.S. public. Which occurs at the end of the movie.
"The Bourne Ultimatum" is not an intellectual film, nor mentally stimulating in any way, apart from that nervous system adrenaline ride you'll get, as you travel with Bourne, shaky camera action and all, as he carves a trail of destruction, from London, to Madrid onto Tangier, Morocco, then concluding in New York City while escaping impossible situations, and beating the living daylights, plus one kill, of U.S. government bad guys.
