There is a rustic styled coldness to Zumthor's works. It is not post modern, nor
deconstructivism style architecture as such, although very individual to Zumthor's vision, it's fluidity resides within an almost vulnerable projection. Which I don't find appealing. The idea of starkness, should also evoke security, safety. Some of his works don't achieve that, it is 'wooden' stylized concrete facades, large window panels, stilts with
deconstructivism influenced weaving of building and design - a feeling of incompleteness and lack of solidifying
structuralism.
Zumthor has been commissioned by the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art to build on-top of the already LACMA area (existing buildings to be demolished). Below are the scaled models of the project.
The criticisms so far, have been the
building/s will encroach on the prehistoric tar-pits.
