Sometimes popular culture just nails it. This scene from Oliver Stone's 1991 movie JFK, where Willie O'Keefe played by Kevin Bacon, being interviewed, off the record, with Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) asking about the John F. Kennedy assassination conspiracy.  To which O'Keeth offers the assertion of rigged elections and Left Wing/Liberals taking over the country, very much aligned with extreme Right Wing populism.  That being, conspiracy theories and the fear of minority groups rising up.  Interesting, O'Keefe was a homosexual, yet one has seen these similarities with the so-called "Alt-Right" and the many who have followed the Donald Trump Deep State narrative.
