From the Chiasmus archive: July 11th, 2013. "FERMI PARADOX (PART 1) - THE ZOO HYPOTHESIS"

Great discussion point and general mind flush, or possibly a paradox in it's own right (Are we alone in the universe?) that one should not be bothered with, but we are curious creatures.  So fuck it, after a round of Vodka and Gin cocktails (or neat) - the Fermi Paradox discussion could be the best thing you'll have in a long time.  What is the Femi Paradox?  In it's basic premise: Why haven't we found/heard/seen/sampled extraterrestrial lifeforms in all scientific and probable mediums? In blunt terms: There might be nothing else out there, except for us.

So I have taken the top 11 'Solutions to the Fermi Paradox' from 109.com (and other sources) an added my take on that solution.  First one:

1. The Zoo Hypothesis (Icarus  Volume 19, Issue 3, July 1973, Pages 347–349 - John Ball)

"Extraterrestrial intelligent life may be almost ubiquitous. The apparent failure of such life to interact with us may be understood in terms of the hypothesis that they have set us aside as part of a wilderness area or zoo"

I kinda like this one, is that we are a spectacle, observation of an advanced alien civilization.  I actually wrote about that possibility in The Chaos Syndicate, when Lara receives her powers from a long extinct alien civilization (DNA recoding technology 'relay' sent every 3000 years to a secret chamber in the Pyramid of The Sun).  That, according to Samael Hawks (The Chaos Syndicate's leader) was sent from an ancient and advanced alien civilization, who nurtured early humanity - more so the Egyptians and Aztecs.  However there was interaction, but not physical, rather observational and at times communicating (via projected apparitions) with the high priests of those two ancient human civilizations.  John Ball's assertion (The Zoo Hypothesis) is that we are actually being left alone to be observed, rather than gently pushed along and watched.  Is also a slightly incomplete view, as like in a Zoo, humans do interact with the animals - especially some of the animals closer to our DNA (showing emotional intelligence) that being the Chimpanzees.  There is something in us, where we feel we could possibly nurture (and assist to evolve?) a primitive life form i.e Chimps.  Since our evolution is more advanced than chimpanzees, I doubt an alien civilization would not have some hands on in a Zoo Hypothesis - so I feel, there would be some interaction, if their (alien) observations were to help us reach our full potential, rather than just stare at us, we would (as I wrote about) have some contact, no matter how light it may be, to assist our technological advancement.  Of course my story is fiction and to tie up the idea that they (nurturing aliens) were observing and offering 'guidance' (and powers), as we grow in an intergalactic Zoo Environment.  The highly advanced and very old alien civilization actually went extinct themselves.  Therefor leaving us in a perpetual Zoo 'state', unattended by the custodians, as we struggle to find a way out.

So, is it possible away from fiction and speculation (which is backed from lack of scientific evidence) that aliens haven't visited us, haven't contacted us, but might be observing us.  Is that the alien observation or Zoo Hypothesis that has occurred for millions of years, awaiting a moment to contact us, assist us, or nurture us (which now could be too late in our evolution) -  but rather, they (aliens that set up the Zoo) could have become extinct.  So therefor it maybe likely that we are alone in that 'wilderness area' of the universe.
