"Brood over Dusk" cocktail
For the mix:
- 1/4 ounce of Maraschino liqueur
- 1 ounce of Dubonnet
- 1/2 ounce of Pomegranate syrup
- One Half of fresh lime juice
- Tonic Water
Alcohol base:
- Two ounces of a quality midtier Blanco Tequila, I used El Jimador. Once ounce of Dubonet, 1/4 ounce of Maraschino Liqueur
- Ice
- Two Ounces of Tequila (Blanco)
- 1 ounce of Dubonnet
- 1/2 ounce of Pomegranate syrup
- 1/4 ounce of Maraschino Liqueur
- One Half of fresh lime juice
- Tonic Water
Garnish:
- Quarter lime slice
Preparation:
Add the ice, preferable to a Collins glass, I used a cosmopolitan glass for this cocktail. Followed by 2 ounces of Tequila, then the 1 ounce of Dubonnet. 1/2 ounce of Pomegranate syrup and 1/4 Maraschino Liqueur. Juice of half of a lime. Top up with Tonic Water (I used sugar free). Gently stir. Lime quarter for garnish.
Background:
This is basically a reworking of the original Tequila Sunrise form the 1930's which did not have orange juice in it, it was a tart and somewhat sweet cocktail. Probably seen as a refreshing Tequila based drink, rather than competitor to the Margarita. Later, in the 1970's Orange juice was added to the cocktail, and the Pomegranate syrup removed. Subsequently the tartness was toned down with sweetened Grenadine juice. As I drink on Friday evenings and occasionally Sunday's, Friday cocktails are an evening drink and thus this cocktail is prepared before the sunset. And enjoyed when Dusk arrives, between twilight in all of its broodiness. It is a tart variant of the original cocktail, with the Pomegranate syrup and sweet bitterness of the Dubonnet. The Maraschino Liqueur adds an extra layer of a cherry flavoured taste, balancing the tart and bitter. Lime juice is essential, as it complements the Tequila perfectly. The tonic water, holds the drink together, yet it is the Tequila that should be tasted, that being Two ounces which are needed to give it some kick.
