(Chhinnamasta. Circa 1800s)
((.
One of the ten goddesses of esoteric Tantric, Chhinnamasta is the goddess of contradictions. In Tibetan esoteric Buddhism she is known as Chinnamunda. The goddess holds a paradox of meanings, from being a nourisher of life, she also takes life. Of sexual control, she embodies sexual energy. Sex, death and destruction, life and recreation. As she stands over a couple having sex, with the female on top of the male (viparita-rati), whilst Chhinnamasta has self decapitated her own head and feeds her blood to herself and two disciples, Dakini (left) and Varnini (right).
