Reading: "Rituals of the Antithetical" from the novel RITUALS OF THE ANTITHETICAL (A.Glass 2023)
Smiling, Diarmid acknowledges the two secretaries sitting behind a large white granite desk, as she turns left down a passageway to where her own office is located. With her left hand she opens the glass door, walking into her medium size office, which is sparse and modernist looking. Placing her coffee down onto a metallic coaster on her desk, with the pager. She sits down looking at the two monitors in front of her, using her left index finger she guides the cursor to the desktop icons, bringing up the two data input forms she had completed earlier. While, with her free hand, she flips open the pager screen so that it is angled ninety degrees. She taps with her right index finger, bringing up a received email message.
“Hey Aria! Drinks tonight? Let me know? Johanna.”
Lifting up the pager, she quickly types back.
“Sure! I’ll pick the place! You buy the drinks!”
Placing the pager back into its position, whilst looking over the forms, ensuing that she had completed them correctly before submitting them to the firm’s database. Satisfied, she taps the submit button allowing the two forms to be uploaded onto the main server. Seeing that they both have been submitted, reaching forward, she lifts the cup of coffee, swiveling the chair around. Diarmid looks out at the view from her office window.
“I am still pinching myself, that I did this…” She looks up at the skyline. “...Feels like a dream...” Diarmid thinks of her mentor D’adri. “...I’ll see him, before I go out tonight.” Sitting back in her chair, she clicks on a news report feed.
“Markets fell, taking all indices lower today, lead by the NASDAQ when Apple reported that it would be pushing back the development of what would be known as the Smartphone, which has been said will replace the Pager that we’ve all been using over the years. After the Taiwan and China war of Nineteen Ninety Eight. When China, through a military miscalculation, detonated a Nuclear warhead over Taipei. Destroying the advanced chip making industry overnight, causing the price of computer chips to skyrocket and a massive chip shortage ensured decades later. IBM stock was also down over Ten Percent over the last week, due to their Summit supercomputer requirement, to have more input power as it and the NVIDIA’s titled Selene system. As the IBM and NVIDIA supercomputers are still trying to decipher the Alien message that was received in Nineteen Ninety Seven…”
Suddenly an internal email is received to Diarmid’s employee portal. She reaches forward with her finger and taps the icon on her monitor opening up the email.
“Hey Aria! Drinks tonight? Let me know? Johanna.”

“Sure! I’ll pick the place! You buy the drinks!”
